Curling Irons!
We've all see that video tutorial with the poor girl curling her hair, only to see it burn off on the curling iron. Let me tell you, when we at Skyline Downtown Salon saw this, our jaws dropped! Let me help you out so that won't happened to your beautiful hair.
If you smell something burning when you use your curling iron on your hair, then it is TOO HOT! Either that or you are using the curling iron with an oily product or because your hair is not dried. Whatever the cause, you are damaging your hair. Stop!
Also, when you have had your hair chemically treated, it becomes more porous and prone to further damage from heat styling. You should also lower the temperature settings in order to avoid burning. You need to be using a curling iron with an adjustable temperature setting. Adjustable temperature settings are important to allow you to set the heat level on your iron and prevent burning the hair. It’s also important to be able to set your iron’s heat to match the needs of your hair. Coarse hair needs more heat than fine hair does, simply because the fine hair is thinner. Of course, dry or damaged hair needs much gentler heat for styling to prevent further damaging the hair. So, if the iron you’re looking at doesn’t offer adjustable heat settings, pass it by!
You also need to make sure that your curling iron is clean. Did you know that product residue can build up over time and can cause a burning smell and create hot spots on an iron. Even heat distribution is very important. If one part of the iron heats faster than the rest, you can be sure that parts of the hair being curled will heat up faster. This leads to burning and over-stressing areas of the hair which means that the hair will become damaged. This can lead to burning hair, and discoloration of the hair when the iron is used.
